PALANGKA RAYA, folitimes.id – Wildfire smoke has caused respiratory problems in 47 orangutans at the Nyaru Menteng Rehabilitation Centre. A young orangutan named Novita also suffered burns after becoming trapped in a fire-affected area.
Novita Found in a Burned Area
In addition, a joint team evacuated Novita from the Katune area on September 26, 2026.
Burn Injuries Require Care
Meanwhile, novita suffered injuries to her hands and feet. Tissue damage required veterinary intervention on parts of her toes.
Furthermore, veterinarians continue to monitor her recovery.
Forty-Seven Orangutans Affected
In addition, of the 224 orangutans at Nyaru Menteng, 47 showed respiratory problems. Staff provide care according to each animal’s condition.
Meanwhile, this figure is not automatically the number receiving nebulizer treatment.
Wildfire Smoke Reaches Rehabilitation Centre
Furthermore, exposure to smoke can harm animals even when a rehabilitation site does not burn directly. Conservation teams need to maintain suitable conditions for care.
In addition, the threat from wildfires extends beyond the area of visible flames.
Rescue Requires Cooperation
Central Kalimantan’s conservation agency, the BOS Foundation and other partners helped rescue the animals. A rapid response is necessary when fire reaches their habitat.
Care after evacuation also requires resources.
Prevention Protects Habitat
Fire can cause direct injuries, while wildfire smoke disrupts breathing. Authorities and conservation organisations need to strengthen fire prevention.
