JAKARTA, folitimes.id – Indonesia’s national team made history in Jakarta by winning the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The team defeated Thailand in a penalty shootout after the final ended 2–2 following 120 minutes.
The victory also ended a long run of eight meetings without a win against Thailand over roughly a decade.
A Dramatic FIFA ASEAN Cup Final
Indonesia faced a Thailand side that chose to defend and wait for opportunities in transition.
The deadlock was broken in the 84th minute when Dean James put Indonesia ahead. Iklas Sanron equalised three minutes later.
Thailand Takes the Lead
The match went into extra time.
Despite playing with 10 men, Thailand scored through Peeradol Chamrasamee in the 111th minute.
The goal left Indonesia in a critical position with only a few minutes remaining.
Baggott Rescues Indonesia
Elkan Baggott then changed the direction of the match.
In the 116th minute, the Bangkok-born player scored the equaliser. The ball struck the underside of the crossbar before entering Thailand’s goal.
The 2–2 score forced a penalty shootout.
Audero Makes the Difference
The pressure then shifted to the goalkeeper.
Thailand captain Sarach Yooyen missed the team’s third penalty. Emil Audero subsequently saved Nattapong Sayriya’s attempt, securing the trophy for Indonesia.
A Long Wait Ends
The victory meant more than a trophy.
Indonesia finally defeated Thailand after eight matches without a win over about 10 years. The team achieved it in the tournament’s biggest match.
Momentum for Indonesian Football
President Prabowo Subianto also received FIFA President Gianni Infantino and discussed stronger cooperation in developing Indonesian football. The government sees football as a means of building sporting achievement and character.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup title provides fresh momentum. The challenge is to turn the celebration into better competitions, player development and sustained achievement.
