JAKARTA, folitimes.id – Spain secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final after defeating France 2-0 in a commanding semifinal performance at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday, July 14, local time.

Mikel Oyarzabal broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute before Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the 58th minute.

Although the final score suggested a relatively comfortable victory, the match itself showcased Spain’s superior tactical organization, midfield control, and defensive discipline.

Throughout the contest, Luis de la Fuente’s squad consistently denied France’s star-studded attack the time and space needed to create meaningful chances.

Spain Controlled the Match from Midfield

France entered the semifinal with one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking units, led by Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Michael Olise.

Spain responded by taking control of the midfield from the opening whistle.

Rodri anchored the defensive midfield, while Pedri and Dani Olmo constantly found pockets of space between France’s midfield and defensive lines.

Whenever possession changed hands, Spain immediately launched an aggressive counter-press, preventing France from building attacks through the center.

The strategy isolated Mbappé and disrupted France’s transition game.

Instead of allowing France to attack at speed, Spain forced their opponents into slower, predictable passing sequences.

The Penalty That Changed the Match

The game’s decisive turning point arrived in the 22nd minute.

Lamine Yamal accelerated into the penalty area after Lucas Digne failed to control the ball cleanly.

As Digne attempted to recover, he clipped Yamal, prompting referee Iván Barton to award a penalty.

Oyarzabal calmly converted the spot kick, sending goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way and giving Spain a deserved 1-0 lead.

The decision immediately sparked debate.

France argued that Yamal may have handled the ball moments before the foul, but after review, the officiating team allowed the penalty to stand.

Despite expressing disappointment after the match, France head coach Didier Deschamps admitted Spain deserved the victory.

“I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but we also have to admit Spain played better football tonight,” Deschamps said.

He added that France simply failed to reach the technical level required in such a high-profile semifinal.

Spain Punished France Again

France attempted to increase their attacking intensity after halftime.

However, the tactical adjustment created more space behind their midfield.

Spain quickly exploited that weakness.

In the 58th minute, Pedro Porro combined brilliantly with Dani Olmo before finishing confidently beyond Maignan to double Spain’s advantage.

The goal effectively ended France’s hopes of a comeback.

Porro later praised his teammates for maintaining composure throughout the match.

“We know how strong this team is. Everyone worked incredibly hard, and we deserved this victory,” the Spanish defender said.

France Struggled to Create Clear Chances

One of the most striking aspects of the semifinal was France’s inability to generate high-quality opportunities.

Spain’s compact defensive shape blocked passing lanes toward Mbappé, forcing the French captain to receive possession far from dangerous areas.

Whenever Mbappé touched the ball, Spain already had multiple players positioned to close him down.

As a result, France relied heavily on speculative shots rather than structured attacks.

Expected Goals (xG) statistics reflected the difference in attacking quality.

Spain created significantly better scoring opportunities, while France rarely tested goalkeeper Unai Simón with clear-cut chances.

Small Tactical Details Made the Difference

Spain’s victory was not built solely on individual brilliance.

Several subtle tactical decisions proved decisive.

Rodri constantly screened the back four.

Pedri dictated the tempo.

Olmo drifted intelligently between the lines.

Yamal stretched France’s defense with direct running.

Porro timed his overlapping runs perfectly without compromising defensive balance.

Meanwhile, France struggled with distribution under pressure.

Mike Maignan nearly gifted Spain another goal after misplacing a pass late in the first half, while Lucas Digne’s mistake resulted in the decisive penalty.

The semifinal demonstrated that modern football is often decided by organization rather than individual talent alone.

Spain Return to the World Cup Final

With the victory, Spain reached their second FIFA World Cup final after winning the tournament in 2010.

Luis de la Fuente emphasized that his players were not satisfied simply by reaching the final.

“We faced one of the best national teams in the world, but today they faced the best team in the world,” the Spain coach said after the match.

Midfielder Rodri echoed that ambition.

“Getting here has been incredibly difficult, but we want even more. We want to become world champions.”

France Left to Reflect

For France, the defeat ended hopes of reaching a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final.

Despite entering the semifinal on a six-match winning streak, Les Bleus struggled to impose their usual attacking rhythm against Spain’s disciplined defensive system.

France will now shift their focus to the third-place playoff while Spain prepares for the World Cup final against the winner of the England versus Argentina semifinal.
